French + Spanish

Learn French and Spanish together, one root at a time.

Most of their everyday words come from the same Latin, and once you see the pattern a French word tells you the Spanish one. Polygelato puts them side by side on every lookup, keeps what you save, and quizzes you from one into the other.

Free to start: five languages and 100 lookups a month. Repeats from the shared cache are free.

Roots they share

  • la nuitla noche

    ← Latin nox, noctis

Both feminine, as the Latin was. English night is a far cousin, through Proto-Indo-European.

  • le laitla leche

    ← Latin lac, lactis

One root, two genders: masculine in French, feminine in Spanish. The article is part of the word, which is why Polygelato never strips it.

  • la fraisela fresa

← French fraise, from Latin fraga (plural of fragum)

Spanish borrowed the word from French, so here the two are not cousins but parent and child.

  • And the one that trips everyone

    embarrasséembarazada

French embarrassé means embarrassed. Spanish embarazada means pregnant.

Look it up, keep it, and review it from one language into the other.

Saved words build your own wordbank, and spaced repetition brings them back at the right time — including cards that ask in one of your languages and answer in another. Study is free on every plan.
